HE usually plays his guitar in the background, but Mayday bassist Masa finally got a chance to shine on his own last Saturday.

The rock band was performing at Singapore Expo Max Pavilion, as part of its Jump! concert tour.

Appearing onstage with a keyboard, Masa, 30, went on to give a rousing rendition of Coldplay's Yellow and his own composition, The Most Important Small Thing.
Judging by how people screamed for him, and by the thunderous applause that followed, the audience loved his rare showcase.

A fan, psychologist Alice Lee, 31, said: 'It was so unexpected, and Masa was amazing - singing and playing the keyboard at the same time.

'It's like, is that really Masa? I was very touched. He sang well, and his voice is more manly than (lead singer) Ashin's.'

Occupational therapist Shum Lai San, 25, said: 'The mood was romantic and Masa was so passionate playing the keyboard.'

FUNNY

That's not all. Some fans were also tickled by Masa's wacky Singlish.

When introducing himself on stage, he said: 'Since we're here, we should speak as the locals do.

'Good night everybodee... Today is belly (very) special.'

The 8,000-strong full-house crowd exploded into peals of laughter.
Student Tan Huiting, 18, said: 'We never knew Masa could sing. He was so humorous, and he spoke the best English.'

But most of the three-hour show was shared by all the five members.

Vocalist Ashin, 32, guitarists Monster and Stone, both 31, drummer Guan You,34, and Masa collaborated seamlessly to get the audience to jump with them and pump their fists in the air.

Not even a weak sound system could dampen the infectious mood, as the band belted out more than 30 of its hit songs, like Born To Love, Angel, Tenderness , Peter & Mary and Garbage Truck.

The quintet also paid tribute to Hong Kong rock band Beyond by crooning the latter's hit song, Paradise.

It even taught fans to sign the letters L-O-V-E with their hands, a la YMCA, to go with their song LOVE-ing.

Ashin declared onstage: 'Let's blast the roof off and break the ground, then next year we can have our concert at the stadium instead.
To show his love for Singapore fans, Monster even sported a fake tattoo of the Chinese words Xin Jia Po, or Singapore, on his right arm.

The earnest Ashin also rewarded fans who sang along with him with the compliment that 'the most beautiful sound on earth is your voice'.

Besides entertaining the crowd, the Mayday guys also showed that their music can be thought-provoking too.

The first half of the concert had a sombre message about the destructive effects of war and environmental pollution, complete with a short video that turned the band members into valiant soldiers in a polluted world where dolphins are extinct.

SOCIAL MESSAGE

Some may find it boring, but others like civil servant Jan Toh were touched by the socially-conscious message.

Ms Toh, 32, said the Mayday guys managed to add depth to their concert on top of their usual entertaining performance, and gave a fresh spin to their old
hit, Crazy World.
'Crazy World used to be such a happy song, but it felt different this time.
It sounds more pessimistic and sad, as if the world has gone crazy. But it complemented the message well,' she said.

當輪到瑪莎自我介紹時,他說:「既然我們在新加坡,就應該跟本地人講同樣的話-Good night everybodee..Today is belly(very) special.」
